Evan and I drove up for a quick little visit to Bellingham this weekend. We couldn’t afford to take much time away from the business, but we broke down on Saturday from the extreme heat in our apartment and just had to get away for a bit. Sunday we saw family and barbecued. We got fresh-caught shrimp off a boat down at the marina from a family business that sells their own catch–you’ve gotta love that! We fired up the grill for some steaks, zucchini, and corn on the cob. With the shrimp, it was way too much food. Evan fell asleep on the couch still holding his book, a cat curled up next to him, and Kirsten and I chatted over some wine. The next morning, we zipped back down to Pdx to start the workweek.
Bellingham and the surrounding region is, quite honestly, a little slice of heaven. You’ve got the North Cascades and Canadian Rockies dotting the horizon, the San Juan Islands out in the Sound, Vancouver (only one of the coolest cities ever) only an hour away to the north, Seattle an hour and a half away to the south, water everywhere, green, verdant forests, farmland on the floodplain, harvesting oysters, mussels, gooey ducks, nettles, mushrooms, fishing, crabbing, hiking, skiing, boating, biking, bird watching, berry picking… the list goes on and on.
Here are a few of my favorite photos I’ve taken from the area:

Weathered tractor in front of a corn field in Skagit Valley.

Two women with little girl wearing angel wings at Larrabbe Beach.

Happy boats in the marina.

Dinghy, anyone?

Larrabbe Beach on Chuckanut

Tavern in Bow-Edison. Gotta love the antlers.

Moored sailboats on a glass bay in the morning.

Part of the old GP plant on Bellingham Bay. It’s not there anymore–the plant is being torn down and renovated into a mixed-use retail/commercial/residential pedestrian space.

Sunset on Bellingham Bay.
